Pre-Purchase Surveys

$19 per foot

Pre-Purchase surveys are performed on the behalf of the prospective buyer to uncover potential or current problems with the vessel. Pre-Purchase surveys include inspections of the hull, stringers, transom, bulkheads, fuel tanks, decks, gel-coat, hoses, through-hulls, hoses, wiring, navigation systems, steering, propulsion, etc.

Pre-Purchase surveys often include a water test and a haul out. The propulsion system will be tested in a reasonable capacity. The pre-purchase survey will include a 30+ page report including the vessels onboard systems, general information and most importantly the “Findings” section which includes the areas of concern which were discovered during the survey. A valuation is also included which has a “Fair Market Value” of the vessels determined by the surveyor.

Insurance Surveys

Insurance surveys are generally performed at the request of the insurance company. An insurance survey is generally performed how the boat sit, whether that be on a lift, trailer, dry storage, or in the water. Insurance surveys no not include haul-outs of water tests, but can be included for an additional fee if requested. While the insurance survey still includes inspection of all accessible areas of the vessel they are mostly concerned with major problems.

$16 per foot

But Why? Insurance companies will require surveys on vessels due to a combination of age, value, and size. Even if you have been insured for years. The insurance company wants to make sure the vessel they are insuring is still functional and in expected condition. On a side note it is generally not advised to purchase a vessel relying on an insurance survey. The surveyor might have not taken the same amount of care in that survey as might be taken during a pre-purchase.
